Benefits received by the host city

The fundemental benefit that Singapore can receive by hosting the WorldWide Festival [ Singapore Edition ] is definitely recognition, putting her mark in the music scene.

This is where fans of this festival would likely attend the festival even though its a Singapore Edition.

I believe some of the artist that came down to perform for the WorldWide Festival was their first time coming to Singapore. Thus, with such an event held in a small country such as Singapore, I believe that they would take a piece of Singapore experience along with them after the festival. Word of mouth is a very strong and powerful tool.
Artists might share their performance or their experienece in Singapore with their other musical conterparts or family members and this would alloow Singapore to be known.

Then of course, a Tourism benefit would be tourism revenue. Not forgetting also business opportunity. This is where the festival would be able to provide Singapore with a strong platform for showcasing their expertise, hosting potential investors and promoting new business opportunities.

Since there was a clun invasion during the festival, not all clubs would be able to gain benefist from the festival. This is only limited to the clubs that are in partnership with the festival would be able to gain tourism revenue benefits.

Reflection on the main purpose of WorldWide Festival

The main purpose of this festival and I quote from the official website http://www.worldwidefestival.com/about.php is "Bringing quality Music to the masses".

The festival delievers a wide selection of music from around the region as well as internationally. Not only is the festival held in Europe but also in Asia. Cities such as Singapore, Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai.

This music festival really brings music to the masses right at their doorsteps. Be it in Europe or Asia.

What's nice about WorldWide Festival is that not only can talents come forth to show case their creative work but also where talents come togther to embrace music as a whole at the same time such as Jazz, Techno, House or Urban music or all of the above.

And the WorldWide Festival Singapore Edition is a very good example of spreading the love and passion of music all the way from where it first originated which is in Sete (south of France).
And i believe that having a WorldWide Festival Singapore Edition shows that Singapore truely has the factor and the edge to hold such an international event.

I quote from the website http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=84157192&blogId=403591086 where WWF Singapore partner Kinemat is "hoping to make Singapore a permanent stop for the Worldwide Festival in Asia."

Best Practices of WorldWide festival

For each booklet provided during the opening of the festival, there is a Survival kit section of DO's and DON"Ts during the festival..

DO's
- Get tickets early from www.gatecash.com.sg to avoid the unglamorous queues.
- Come with great attitute and a huge appreciation for a variety of music
- Bring your best pair of dancing shoes
- Drinks of liquids of all kinds, to beat the heat
- Dress to impress, you might be on a cover of a magazine
- Dance, dance, dance (but don't sawim)

DON'Ts
- Drink and drive.
- Bring ear plugs unless you're deaf of course
- Leave home without your cash and credit-card

All these are pointers to enjoy during the festival

Fans and supporters of the festival could also subscribe to the festival's newsletter..
this way, fans are able to get the daily dose and keep themselves updated with the up and coming perfomances of the various performers.

Another best practice of the festival is having a TALENT SEARCH.. which is called "WorldWide Music Talent Search" (this however only applies for countries in Europe). But nevertheless, such a program can actually hype up the music scene, where potential bands and soloists are discovered.

The winner would get a chance to perform for the up-and-coming Festival in July 2009 held in Sete (south of France) but also the have the opportunity to perfom side by side with the best known music talents of this generation.

Another best practice that I think that the festival has is the DURATION...
the festival last not more than 4 days is just nice. Neither is it too long nor is it too short.

Lastly, the best practice of this festival does not only limit to European countries/cities but expanding its presence to Asian cities such as Tokyo, Beijing and also Singapore. Bringing music closer to everyone.

Marketing Strategy of WorldWide Festival

There are 8 'Ps' in Marketing Events
1. Product - where quality and service is essential
2. Place - the physical place and it is where the event product is being distributed
3. Partnership - common partners would be government agencies
4. Promotion - using a full range of 'communication mix'. Where ongoing management and relationship is required.
5. Programming - creating target benefits to the target market
6. People - interactions among the visitors and management. hospitiality given to the visitors
7. Packaging & Distribution -Packaging with other attractions and service. Distribution of tickets and also using intermediaries of various types. Good relationship must be cultivated with packaging partners anf intermediaries.
8. Price - its the price tag of the event in addition to the (admission, merchandise, vendor rental and sponsorship fees).

I will be comparing the WorldWide Festival, a music festival to a Festival Pantireo, Cannes, France

A little more on what Festival Pantiero is all about.

Festival Pantiero is a music festival held roof top terrace, overhanging the sea. The place can accommodate up to 2000 persons.
The festival actually provides its fans and supporters with mainly international electronic music. However, it also offers other wide variations such as afro-beat, afro house, electro dub, house, electro-pop, hip hop, reggae and electro-jazz.

The festival started in 2002 and has been continuously held every year since then. It is now on its 8th year this 2009. The duration of the event usually last for 4 evenings.

a. Product:
Both festivals’ product offers its fans of 4 days of good quality music from talents all over the world. Both festivals’ also provide a venues for mass accommodation to enjoy the blissful music.

b. Place:
Worldwide Festival originated and started in Sete (south of France). Another than being held in France, the festival has extended its presence and is now held not only in European countries but also Asian cities such as Singapore and Tokyo. The festival usually takes place in Clubs or beaches.

Festival Pantiero however, is held only in Cannes another city in France. The festival usually takes place on a roof top terrace that can hold up to 2000 people. Festival Pantiero though popularly known in Cannes has not yet been marketed to other cities and abroad.

c. Partnership
Because Worldwide Festival is held not only in the city of France, it also partners with various companies in other cities overseas to make the festival a success.
However, the usual partners that Worldwide festival partners with are companies from music based television channel, radio stations, various entertainment magazines and even online video streaming website.

Festival Pantiero on the other hand partners with also a music based television, radio stations and magazines. However, the festival does partner with MYSPACE. Myspace is a popular social networking site. Through this site, fans of the festival can come together.
d. Promotion:
Worldwide festival’s Singapore Edition for an example partnered with DBS is as the official card partner. This means that card members of DBS are able to have privileges. Card members can have discounts for tickets and also for the drinks that are provided throughout the whole duration of the festival.

From what I have read so far, Festival Pantiero promotion would be its reduced ticket fees.

e. Programming:
Because Worldwide festival has an aim to offer quality music to the masses there would be a unique program lined up. Also with Mr. Peterson’s immense popularity within the artist and DJ community we have unlimited access to the most exciting and up & coming talents around. Thus, through this, program lined up would be located at unique environments and venues.

In relation to Singapore, not only is the festival held at one venue, it is extended to different ‘happening’ places in Singapore. From the opening at SAM to club invasions at Zirca to a Siloso beach during the weekend for weekenders.

Festival Pantiero on the other hand has the festival held at one venue. Since the festival has been ongoing every year since 2002 at the same location, I believe that the programs and also the artist that performed during the festival are constantly coming up with new and fresh numbers to provide quality and enjoying music for the fans.

f. Packaging & Distribution:
For Worldwide festival, there is actually a standard ticket fee. However, it was advertised that for those who would like to get their tickets earlier is able to get it once they e-mail the organisers upon request.
They have also used a travel agency where fans or supporters from all over the world can go through the agency to attend the festival at Sete (south of france) where the festival would usually be held yearly. Then of course accommodation would also be part of that package.
For Festival Pantiero, the management has actually teamed up with hotels. The hotels sponsoring the Festival will give a particularly warm welcome and offer special Festival rates to meet the fans requirements.

Stakeholders in WorldWide Festival

"Stakeholders" are groups within or outside the organisation that affects or are affected by business. In this case is the festival. Stakeholders have an interest in the operation of WorldWide Festival.

Without the partnership of the various companies and agencies especially the with the sponsors, I doubt that the festival or any festival or event for that matter would be a success.
Then of course, the other stakeholders of this festivals are the music enthusiats who come for the festival to enjoy the music a.ka. the people..
Not forgetting an important stakeholder, Mr Gilles Peterson.

Listed in below are the stakeholders of this festival.

I believe most of the sponsors and stakeholders want to be involve in this festival because they feel that they can market the product (which in this case is the festival itself).

Marketing Strategy of WorldWide Festival

After the first band performed, Gilles went up on stage and gave an opening speech. Basically welcoming and thanking the people who attended the opening ceremony for the festival.

After his opening speech, there was a short prize giving ceremony.
The prizes actually went out to the winners who designed T-shirt prints solely for the festival itself.

Thus, I believe that the organisers actually set up a T-shirt design contest of “WHO CAN COME UP WITH THE BEST DESIGN” for the festival itself.

To compare the WorldWide festival to a similar festival held that has been successful in another city in terms of marketing strategy is.......

More about WorldWide Festival

Just a little bit about the festival....

From my research, the world wide festival was actually a musical project, and Gilles Peterson a local DJ from North London was called to perform in one of the festival. He then became very keen in creating a music festival.

So in 2007, the WorldWide Festival was developed and was held at many different cities. Cities such as Shanghai, Singapore, London, Beijing and also Tokyo.

The festival usually do not last for more than 4 days.
I felt that the duration of the festival is just nice. It not too long where enthusiasts would find it a bore and neither is it too short where enthusiast would find it difficult to attend.

Here is a picture of me and "THE MAN" Mr Gilles Peterson himself :)

Choice of festival: WorldWide Festival

The festival that I chosen to attend is the WorldWide Festival.
The festival was held from 7th to 10th of May. This is the 2nd time that this festival was returning to Singapore after its success last year 2008, 16 May.

It is basically 4 days of non-stop blissful music. It was held at different places in Singapore, night clubs such as Zirca and also at Sentosa’s very own Siloso Beach.

I attended the opening of the festival which was held at the Singapore Arts Museum (SAM) on a Thursday , 7pm.
The price of the ticket was at $25 however, I sent the management an email requesting 2 pre-booking tickets at $18 each which I thought was a pretty reasonable price for such an event.
Here is a short clip that I took of Gilles Peterson's opening speech of WorldWide Festival
